“…The distribution of body mass in a stopover population is not only shaped by birds that remain to fuel but also by transient birds passing through. Indeed, there are sites where birds carrying large fuel reserves make emergency stops when flying conditions are unfavorable (Bayly and Rumsey 2010); again, this highlights the need to first establish whether birds actually fuel in a region to avoid arriving at the wrong conclusion.…”

“…Tree Pipit and Common Nightingale). These birds presumably consisted mostly of individuals that had no need for further energy reserves and had paused their migration to avoid adverse flight conditions such as high daytime temperatures (Bayly and Rumsey 2010;Salewski et al 2010;Schmaljohann et al 2007). A smaller proportion presumably had failed to accumulate sufficient reserves at more southerly stopover sites.…”

“…While some species will stopover in the Sahel before crossing the Sahara (Ottosson et al 2001), others are thought to fatten further south (Bayly and Rumsey 2010;Ottosson et al 2005). In the past, species stopping over in the Sahel may have been impacted by the well-documented relationship between drought in the Sahel region and population declines in a range of migratory species (e.g.…”

“…The phenology of migration and body mass patterns of Garden Warblers at Malamfatori (Sahel zone of Northern Nigeria) and Amurum (Guinea savanna zone of Nigeria) has been reported by Ottosson et al (2005). Also, data from previous studies have shown that the species does not spend the winter in the Sahel and Guinea Savanna (Ottosson et al 2005, Smith 2007, Bayly & Rumsey 2010. Thus, drawing from these published works, it is clear that during the autumn passage, and after a few months in the Guinea savanna region of Nigeria, Garden Warblers embark on a new leg of migration, presumably to their final wintering quarters.…”
