Garcienone, a Novel Compound Involved in Allelopathic Activity of Garcinia Xanthochymus Hook

Abstract: Plants are sources of diversified allelopathic substances that can be investigated for use in eco-friendly and efficient herbicides. An aqueous methanol extract from the leaves of Garcinia xanthochymus exhibited strong inhibitory activity against barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.), foxtail fescue (Vulpia myuros (L.) C.C.), alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), and cress (Lepidium sativum L.), and appears to be a promising source of allelopathic substances. Hence, bio-activity guided purification of… Show more

“…Therefore, the search for environmentally friendly herbicides from chemosensitive substances is a way to discover new pesticides. Plants are sources of diversified allelopathic substances that can be investigated for use in eco‐friendly and efficient herbicides [40] . Root length, stem length and fresh weight were important indices for evaluating herbicidal activities.…”

“…Plants are sources of diversified allelopathic substances that can be investigated for use in eco-friendly and efficient herbicides. [40] Root length, stem length and fresh weight were important indices for evaluating herbicidal activities. As the seed germination results showed, CSME show excellent herbicidal activity, so we further measured the differences in root length, stem length and fresh weight, with the results listed in Table 2.…”

“…In addition, cress showed higher sensitivity to both compounds compared with Italian ryegrass, and the degree of sensitivity varied by concentration. Several previous studies have also documented such concentration-and testspecies-dependent phytotoxicity of allelochemicals [44][45][46]. The different sensitivities of test species to an allelopathic substance mainly depend on the physiological and biochemical attributes of each test plant.…”

“…Most of these substances are entirely or partially water-soluble, making them more eco-friendly and easier to apply as natural herbicides [18,19]. Consequently, there has been much research on isolating and identifying phytotoxic substances from different plant species to develop natural herbicides [20][21][22]. Some of the allelochemicals isolated from plants have been used in developing allelochemical-based herbicides.…”
