“…Air-borne sounds (i.e., air-borne mechanical waves) are ubiquitous in terrestrial environments, and acoustic signals are considered one of the most efficient forms of communication ( Wilkins et al., 2013 ). In recent years, with the emerging fields of soundscape ecology ( Pijanowski et al., 2011b ) and ecoacoustics ( Sueur and Farina, 2015 ), the number of studies describing the structure of natural soundscapes and interspecific acoustic interactions has increased rapidly ( Servick, 2014 ; Ruppé et al., 2015 ; Burivalova et al., 2019 ; Farina and Reid, 2020 ; Scarpelli et al., 2020 ) and obtained information has been applied to habitat assessment ( Rankin and Axel, 2017 ; Elise et al., 2020 ), community ecology ( Gasc et al., 2013 ; Dodgin et al., 2020 ), and conservation biology ( Krause and Farina, 2016 ; Sueur et al., 2019 ) among others.
