Abstract: A bowel protective effect of gangliosides is indicated by modulation of vasoactive mediators and proinflammatory signal suppression.

“…23,38 In this study, pasteurization did not impact either longchain polyunsaturated fatty acids or gangliosides. Some fatty acid alterations were observed, with pasteurization causing a reduction in relative percentage of oleic acid, and a relative increase in medium-chain fatty acids.…”

“…21 Gangliosides and some long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids are also known to play a role in preventing NEC. 22,23 To date, no investigations on the impact of pasteurization on these immunoactive compounds relevant to NEC have been reported.…”

“…Dietary ganglioside is able to replace mucosal gangliosides that are continually degraded in inflammatory states. Moreover, increasing ganglioside content through diet decreases proinflammatory cytokine production in intestinal mucosa [24, 28] and prevents hypoxia-induced bowel necrosis and cell injury in cultured infant bowel [29]. The following section summarizes the different modes of action by which dietary gangliosides promote intestinal health.…”

“…In preclinical studies, ganglioside treatment increases ganglioside content and inhibits signals caused by proinflammatory stimuli tumour necrosis factor- α and interleukin- (IL-) 1 β in rats [28]. Similarly, ganglioside reduces IL-6 and IL-8 production in cultured infant bowel when exposed to LPS under hypoxic conditions [29]. Replacing ganglioside that is degraded protects the gut by attenuating proinflammatory signals.…”
