Ganglioneuromas in hamsters

Abstract: A description is given of three cases of ganglioneuromas, which originated from ganglia of the sympathetic chain of hamsters. Other reports of such tumors in this species are reviewed and the literature relative to hamster ganglioneuromas presented. In addition, the possible genesis of origin from adult ganglion cells upon the action of carcinogenic stimuli is discussed.

“…Furthermore, there were single cases described in the pituitary gland of an SD-derived rat (Pace and Perentes 2001) and an aged F344 rat (Okazaki et al 1997). Ganglioneuroma also may occur as a spontaneous neoplasm in hamsters (Rustia and Cardesa 1975) and has been shown to arise from the trigeminal ganglion in an aged B6C3F1 mouse (Yasui et al 2009). The malignant form of ganglioneuroma is the ganglioneuroblastoma, a neuroblastoma variant characterized by a small region of dark basophilic, oval, stemlike cells surrounded by ganglion cells.…”

“…In addition, only one case of ganglioneuroma derived from the cranial ganglion has been reported in a rat (Fitzgerald et al 1974). In hamsters, three cases of ganglioneuromas originating from the sympathetic ganglia have been published (Rustia and Cardesa 1975). To the best of our knowledge, however, there have been no reports of ganglioneuromas arising from any organs or tissues other than the adrenal glands in mice.…”
