Gamma-Ray Induced Radiation Damage in Large Size LSO and LYSO Crystal Samples

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents a study of the gamma-ray induced radiation damage effect in large size (2.5 2.5 20 cm 3 ) LSO and LYSO crystal samples. Optical and scintillation properties, including longitudinal transmittance and photo-luminescence spectra, light output and light response uniformity with PMT and APD readout, are measured before and after -ray irradiations with an integrated dose up to 10 6 rad for three LSO and LYSO samples from different vendors. It was found that 300 C thermal annealing remove… Show more

“…Their excellent radiation hardness against gamma rays [15,20], neutrons [17] and charged hadrons [10] also makes them a preferred material for calorimeters to be operated in a severe radiation environment, such as the HL-LHC. The top plot of Fig.…”

“…The top plot of Fig. 5 shows the photoluminescence spectra of a LYSO crystal measured before (blue) and after (red) 1 Mrad γ -ray irradiation [20]. To facilitate a comparison, these spectra were normalized to the area between 380 and 460 nm under the spectra.…”

“…In the last years, LYSO crystals have been also proposed as a candidate material for crystal calorimeters, such as those at SuperB factory [1], Mu2e [2] and the COMET experiment [3]. LYSO crystals have a large stopping power, a fast decay time, a large light yield and a good radiation hardness against gamma rays, neutrons and protons, as seen from Table I [4][5][6][7]. Figure 1 shows the emission and the transmittance spectra of the LYSO crystal.…”
