Gamma-Ray Attenuation and Exposure Buildup Factor of Novel Polymers in Shielding Using Geant4 Simulation

Abstract: Polymers are often used in medical applications, therefore, some novel polymers and their interactions with photons have been studied. The gamma-ray shielding parameters for Polymethylpentene (PMP), Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), Polyoxymethylene (POM), Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF), and Polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) polymers were determined using the Geant4 simulation and discussed in the current work. The mass attenuation coefficients (μ/ρ) were simulated at low and high energies between 0.059 and 1… Show more

“…The net area per unit time for each energy peak in the spectrum ( N 0 ) and ( N ) for a particular radioactive source was determined in the absence and in the presence of the tested composite sample. The characteristics of the radioactive sources used in the measurements are listed in Table 2 [ 28 , 29 ].…”

“…The radiation shielding parameters were experimentally determined by the narrow-beam method. A high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector was used, alongside point sources of different energies in cases where their activities and other specifications could be found (Table 2) [27][28][29][30][31][32][33]. The sample was placed between the source and the detector using a collimator and lead shield.…”

“…While the relative increase between the results of the LAC of the micro and nano fillers are evaluated via the following: The intensity (I 0 ), count rate (N 0 ) or area under the peak (A 0 ) were measured for all energies in a case without the SR sample, and then the sample was placed between the source and detector and the count rate (N) or area under the peak (A) was measured at the same time. The LAC was measured experimentally using the following equation [30,31]:…”
