Gamma radiation resistance of the high T c superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−δ

Abstract: Exposure of the high Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−δ to 60Co γ irradiation up to 1.3 Mrad is found to have virtually no effect on its superconductive properties as measured by a novel variant of the microwave absorption method.

“…Recently, it has been reported that the Jc of rare-earth based barium cuprates can be increased by neutron (Wille et al 1988) and proton (Wisniewski et al 1988) irradiation. However gamma ray irradiation of YBaCu3OT_ x did not result in any changes of its superconducting properties (Bohandy et al 1987). On the other hand, reduction of Tc with increasing neutron (Kupfer et al 1987;Cost et al 1988;Wille et al 1988), ion (Clark et al 1987), and electron (Stritzker et al 1988) irradiation has been reported of YBa2Cu307_~,.…”

“…In this communication we present some new results of investigation of influence of γirradiation on the critical temperature of bulk polycrystalline YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−δ (YBCO). The disordering of HTSCs with γ-rays was used rather often in previous experiments, especially in the first years after discovery of HTSCs [10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Such type of investigations could have an applied importance in the case of possible use of HTSCs in environments of nuclear reactors or space stations.…”

“…On this way, the papers dedicated to study gamma irradiation effects on the HTS properties are characterized for a lack of coincidence in criteria and results. Some authors have observed an improvement of the superconducting properties with dose increment (Boiko et at., 1988;Leyva et al, 1992), some others report exactly the opposite (Vasek et al, 1989;Elkholy et al, 1996), and other studies have not found any dependence (Bohandy et al, 1987;Cooksey et al, 1994). These contradictions have not been completely explained yet; some authors even attribute these behaviors to a "sample effect" (Polyak et al, 1990).…”
