Gamma Radiation-Induced Effects over an Optical Fiber Laser: Towards New Sensing Applications

Abstract: In the present work, the effect of gamma radiation on the performance of different types of erbium-doped fibers (EDFs) when they are used in a fiber ring cavity (FRC) configuration is studied. Several pieces of commercial EDF are gamma-ray irradiated with different doses to evaluate the output power variations over time. The influence of different doses, from 150 Gy to 1000 Gy, over the output power level measurement and their amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) are experimentally evaluated both in the C and … Show more

“…After being fabricated, this MD-EDF was characterized by using an optical backscatter reflectometer (OBR). The timedomain acquisition mode with a spatial resolution of 10 µm was employed to evaluate the backscattered light [11] through this 2-meter-long piece of MD-EDF.…”

“…Because of that ultra-high spatial resolution, the employed OBR (LUNA OBR 4600) can be used for internal component and fiber testing [11]. Figure 2 shows the backscattered optical power as a function of the total reflector fiber length when the MD-EDF is connected to the OBR.…”

“…Before placing this MMF-RFG inside the surgical syringe to be positioned in the center of a highprecision rotation mount, its backscattered optical power was characterized with an optical frequency domain reflectometer (OFDR). This ultra-high spatial resolution optical backscattered reflectometer (OBR 4600, from LUNA) is commonly used not only for optical sensing of strain and temperature variations but to test fiber optic components, optical fibers and optical fiber sensors [26]. Free termination of this fiber-based reflector was immersed into index-matching oil to avoid undesired reflections.…”

“…Over the past years, refractive index (RI) sensing has been carried out using different optical fiber-based sensors and its application has spread to many areas with impact on the quality of human life, such as monitoring of ionizing radiation, surgery, seismography, or medical imaging [2], [3]. These optical fiber sensors stand out for their wide bandwidth, immunity to electromagnetic interference, chemical corrosion resistance, small size and biocompatibility, among others [1].…”
