Relaxation lengths and half-thickness values of different types of wood were determined using gamma radiation from 60 C0 source. Results show that oxystigma (Oxystima spp) has the highest relaxation length of 23.810cm, while mangrove (Rhizoohora spp) has the least relaxation length of 1.247 cm. Results also show that Oxystima (Oxystima spp) has the highest half thickness value of 16.500 cm and Mangrove (Rhizophora spp) has the least half-thickness value of 0.864 cm. Two mathematical models have been developed for the prediction or determination of density ρ, variation with relaxation length and half thickness value of wood. A good agreement (greater than 80% in most cases) was observed between the measured values and the predicted ones (models 1 and 2).

Thermal properties (Density, Thermal conductivity and Specific heat capacity) play important impact in the formation of devicesmade of wooden materials. This study examines the room temperature thermal response of ten bulk samples from the species of Pterygota macrocarpa and Antiaris africana wood species found in South Western Nigeria. The samples were processed into appropriate shapes to fit into the parallel plane arrangement to determine the thermal properties. Temperature dependent models were used to obtain the specific heat capacities of the samples within a temperature variation of 308.25𝐾 - 310.00𝐾. The results revealed that the thermal properties (thermal conductivities and specific heat capacities) increase as temperature increases for all the bulk samples considered. The results of the research showed that the selected wood samples could find useful applications in industrial insulating devices. Three bands of cement with different trade names, Dangote, UNICEM, and Eagle cement were separately molded into cement-sand blocks at different proportions of cement sand ratio of 2:3, 3:7 and 1:4 by weight for each of the cement brand were prepared and allowed to cure. We exposed the blocks to gamma radiation for the determination of attenuation coefficient, half thickness, and mass absorption coefficient. We also determined density values for the blocks. The results for the cement samples show that the higher the cement content in the cement sand block, the higher the density value and the gamma attenuation coefficient, suggesting that cement sand block with a high proportion of cement content makes for a good shielding in gamma radiation exposed environment, Gamma radiation attenuation the method can equally be a useful technique for cement sand block quality control in building construction industry.
