Gamma Oscillations Index Sustained Attention in a Brief Vigilance Task

Abstract: Sustained attention is an essential behavior in life, but often leads to performance decrements with time. Computational accounts of sustained attention suggest this is due to brief disruptions in goal-directed processing, or microlapses. Decreases in gamma spectral power are a potential candidate for indexing microlapses and discriminating between low and high performers in sustained attention tasks, while increases in beta, alpha, and theta power are expected to exhibit compensatory effort to offset fatigue.… Show more

“…The present study used GP to evaluate the effect of fatigue on γ activity (70-80 Hz) connectivity in the frontoparietal network by directionality and performance over time. Our hypotheses were guided by recent work associating sustained attention to contemporaneous declines in frontal and parietal γ with time on task (Borghetti et al, 2021), the role of microlapses in sustained attention in computational accounts of fatigue Walsh et al, 2017), and existing research on connectivity for lower frequency bands in a fatigued state (Qi et al, 2019). In comparison to lower frequency bands, γ was constrained to sustained attention in the current experiment paradigm, allowing us to isolate the source of effects on connectivity.…”

“…Recent research has implicated the transient, high frequency gamma band (γ; 70-100 Hz) in sustained attention processes (Borghetti et al, 2021). Specifically, both frontal γ power associated with centrally-controlled attention (Ray et al, 2008; Senkowski et al, 1993) and parietal γ power associated with gated sensory processing (Herrmann et al, 2010) declined over the course of a 10-minute vigil, consistent with the effect of microlapses on central cognition.…”
