Gamma band directional interactions between basal forebrain and visual cortex during wake and sleep states

Abstract: The basal forebrain (BF) is an important regulator of cortical excitability and responsivity to sensory stimuli, and plays a major role in wake-sleep regulation. While the impact of BF on cortical EEG or LFP signals has been extensively documented, surprisingly little is known about LFP activity within BF. Based on bilateral recordings from rats in their home cage, we describe endogenous LFP oscillations in the BF during quiet wakefulness, rapid eye movement (REM) and slow wave sleep (SWS) states. Using cohere… Show more

“…We observed robust BF gamma oscillations in the home-cage recordings, consistent with a previous report (31). The main finding of the present study is a striking (35 ± 3%) and highly significant (paired t test, P < 10 −5 ) reduction of this BF gamma activity when rats were transferred from their home cage to a novel, empty arena which they explored during a 10-min interval (Fig.…”

“…For example, ACh might promote the co-activation of different cortical areas or layers ( Obermayer et al, 2017 ) enabling selection of stimuli related to summation of the temporally coincident presynaptic spikes ( Fries et al, 2002 ) or enabling expended cortical representation of sensory stimuli related to decorrelation between neurons ( Goard and Dan, 2009 ). It can also trigger gamma oscillations allowing coordination between areas and triggering learning ( Rodriguez et al, 2010 ; Nair et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Viruses were obtained from the University of North Carolina Gene Therapy Center Vector Core. BF coordinates were adapted from Paxinos and Watson (2007) and in consultation with previous studies ( Quinn et al, 2010 ; Baxter et al, 2013 ; Avila and Lin, 2014b ; Nair et al, 2016 ). Each rat was anesthetized with isoflurane and then stereotaxically injected bilaterally with 1 μl virus into the target region (AP: 0.6 mm, ML: 2.25, DV: 7.6 from the dura).…”
