Abstract: Contemporary gamelan performance outside Indonesia—and more broadly speaking, the discipline of ethnomusicology—owes a largely unacknowledged debt to a group of Dutch teenagers, who formed the first long-term European gamelan group, Babar Layar, in the prohibitive circumstances of Nazi occupation.
