Game sketching

Abstract: Every project in any aspect of the creative industry must start with an ideation process. The essence of this process is to allow rapid exploration of ideas with very little resource expenditure. For ideation to be successful an idea must be explorable in hours if not minutes. The tools that are used should be readily accessible to designers in the field. The video game industry is a production oriented industry and thus the majority of the technology in this industry has focused on production tools. Very litt… Show more

“…Some researchers in the area of HCI (Buxton, 2007) and in game research (Agustin et al, 2007) have pointed out a need for separating very early prototypes from more fine-tuned ones. They claim that just talking about lo-fi prototyping is not enough; the word sketching would better describe very early prototypes.…”

“…Crabtree et al, for example, use orchestrators to guide the narrative in large-scale pervasive multiplayer game [9]; similarly, in Egyptian Oracle, a puppeteer controls an avatar that interacts with an audience in an augmented reality performance [11]. In game sketching, a designer manipulates the progression of a game in real-time, allowing testing of game ideas before they are fully implemented [1]. For example, in Raptor, an orchestrator uses a tabletop interface to manipulate the content of a game world, while a play tester plays in real time [20].…”

“…In this reflection, a prototype is often used as a sketching tool in Game Design (Manker and Arvola 2011). In the early process of game development, prototypes can take the form of sketch-like games made in, if not minutes, at least hours (Agustin et al 2007).…”
