Game, Set and Match? Substantive Issues and Future Directions in Performance Analysis

Abstract: This article discusses the main substantive issues surrounding performance analysis and considers future directions in this recently formed sub-discipline of sport science. It is argued that it is insufficient to bring together sport biomechanics and notational analysis on the basis that they share a number of commonalities, such as they both aim to enhance performance, they both make extensive use of information and communications technology, and both are concerned with producing valid and reliable data. Rath… Show more

“…Moreover, the analysis of SCD-SPD couples helps to explain the causative processes that affect the outcomes. This analysis is supported by the literature, which reinforces the importance of shifting from a discrete action analysis to a continuous goal-directed behavior analysis (Correia et al, 2013;Glazier, 2010;McGarry, 2009). A possible limitation of the methodology is that to accomplish demands of describing the actions' semantics, it necessarily requires the identification of specialized tactical patterns (e.g., SCDs and SPDs, such as an on ball screen) in the midst of several events in a match.…”

“…Therefore, a dynamical system is a system where the state changes over time (Araújo, 2006). Dynamical system theory may offer a greater scope and potential for scientific endeavour in performance analysis (Glazier, 2010). Therefore, dynamical systems can be interpreted either via a mathematical and physics-based conception.…”

“…However at the time Bartlett (2001) also established a number of challenges requiring attention in the future thereby enabling 'a real fusion of the two disciplines' (Bartlett 2001:5) Although both biomechanics and notational analysis share some commonalities as described by both Bartlett (2001) andGlazier (2010), criticism has emerged from some quarters describing such a joining as a 'marriage of convenience' (Glazier 2010:1). Contention appears to be caused by a perceived 'dumbing down' (Glazier 2010:1) of biomechanical principles while physiologists and psychologists might also perceive themselves as performance analysts in their own right. The authors of this paper strongly argue against what has been described as the 'dumbing down' and support the wider applications of notational analysis, match analysis and time motion analysis techniques by a range of different sports scientists and performance coaches in many applied settings.…”
