Game Responses During Young Padel Match Play: Age and Sex Comparisons

Abstract: García-Benítez, S, Courel-Ibáñez, J, Pérez-Bilbao, T, and Felipe, JL. Game responses during young padel match play: age and sex comparisons. J Strength Cond Res 32(4): 1144-1149, 2018-The purpose of this study was to assess match activity profile and temporal structure in U-16 and U-18 male and female padel players from the 2014 Spanish Youth National Championship. A total of 1,670 rallies from 12 matches were recorded through systematic observation. Variables pertaining to game and point duration, rest interv… Show more

“…Thus, women executed more lobs and cross-court returns than men. This higher use of lobs by female players has been confirmed in previous studies that suggest a more defensive playing style among women [10,44,45]. Thus, because over-head strokes (smash and tray) are the most successful shots during a match, with a significantly higher percentage in the male category [10,46], players returning the serve have to use the lob only in comfortable positions to overcome their opponents at the net, since a poorly executed lobbed return could have as a response a winning smash from the serving players.…”

“…In comparison to table tennis players [29], elite padel players were taller and heavier (177.7 ± 7.3 cm vs. 174.2 ± 1.0 cm, 77.2 ± 9.9 kg vs. 69.7±1.2 kg, respectively), and showed a different somatotype with a greater endomorphic component (5.7 ± 1.2 vs. 3.9). Similarly, in comparison to subelite tennis players [6], the current padel players were taller and heavier (177.7 ± 7.3 cm vs. 180.0 ± 10.0 cm, 77.2 ± 9.9 kg vs. 74.7 ± 7.5 kg, respectively), showing similar somatotype components. The only exception in this case was seen in the mesomorphic component, with padel players showing higher values (5.7 ± 1.2 vs. 4.3 ± 1.2).…”

“…This consequently lengthens rallies so the number of actions and strokes per player is higher in comparison with similar racket sports like badminton, tennis, or squash [2]. Previous studies examining its game dynamics and match activity have defined padel as a high-intensity intermittent activity, which combines high-frequency (0.7-1.5 per second (s)) and low-intensity actions during rallies that are of a moderate duration (9-15 s), interspersed by 1020 s of rest in between, leading to longer breaks of 90 s [3][4][5][6][7]. Offensive success in padel relies on the use of volleys and smashing actions.…”

“…This is particularly important in padel due to the growing number of amateur practitioners worldwide, being mainly middle-aged people between 35 and 55 years [16,17]. State-of-the-art in padel includes available literature concerning temporal structure [3,[18][19][20], players' movements and distance covered on the court [6,15,21], game technical-tactical dynamics [1,2,[22][23][24], fitness status [7,25,26], and injuries [11,27,28]. However, little is known about fundamental motor skills such as the ball impact position [29].…”
