Gallstone disease and mortality: a cohort study

Abstract: Gallstone disease is associated with increased overall mortality and to death from cardiovascular disease. Gallstones may be considered a possible cardiometabolic risk factor. Other unknown factors also seem to play a role.

“…37 Gallstone disease has been linked to higher mortality and increased risks of major chronic diseases [e.g. metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) [38][39][40][41][42][43][44] ], indicating the possibility of shared pathways with other metabolic disorders. The mechanisms underlying SGD development are not well understood, but emerging evidence suggest an important role of insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia and an unfavourable lipid profile such as hypertriglyceridemia or low concentrations of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.…”

“…Studies on gallstone prevalence, incidence, mortality, and clinical follow-up have been published before. 26,[29][30][31][32][33][34] The explanatory variable was gallstone disease proven by ultrasound or cholecystectomy. Gallstones were defined as acoustic shadows that moved with gravity in the gallbladder lumen.…”

“…Gallstones are associated to cardiovascular mortality (Shabanzadeh et al ., ) and associations with cardiovascular disease risk factors have also been identified (Shabanzadeh et al ., ). An exploration of changes with age in cardiovascular risk factors and sex differences is therefore reasonable and would provide knowledge about gallstone disease and prevention.…”
