Galls of Cecidoses eremita Curtis and Eucecidoses minutanus Brèthes (Lepidoptera: Cecidosidae) in Magdalena, Buenos Aires Province: preliminary study and associated fauna

Abstract: In Argentina, five galling species of the family Cecidosidae (Lepidoptera), including Cecidoses eremita Curtis and Eucecidoses minutanus Brèthes, have been cited. This note reports a preliminary study of their galls in "molles" (Schinus longifolius (Lindl.) Speg.) of Magdalena (Buenos Aires, Argentina). In April 2013, galls of C. eremita and E. minutanus were censused in randomly selected "molles". In April and December 2013, randomly selected galls were then collected and transported to our laboratory in herm… Show more

“…Prior to the beginning of this study, E . minutanus was known to exist in four populations ( Fig 2A ) located within the Buenos Aires (type locality) and Mendoza provinces, Argentina [ 22 – 24 ], and in Paraná state, Brazil [ 25 ]. These records came from either reared adults or collected galls associated with Schinus polygamous (Cavanilles) Cabrera (Anacardiaceae) sensu lato , as discussed below.…”

“…of Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil (Brèthes, 1916; Loetti et al, 2016; Silva et al, 2018b). These conspicuous, globoid, external, and operculate cecidosid galls have long drawn the attention of scientists toward their biology (e.g., Curtis, 1835; Kieffer and Jörgensen, 1910; Brèthes, 1916; Wille, 1926; Houard, 1933; Loetti et al, 2016; Silva et al, 2018b). The galls of C. eremita were anatomically studied in detail by Wille (1926), while the galls of E. minutanus have been poorly understood from a histological perspective, except for anecdotal information provided in the original description (Brèthes, 1916).…”

“…Cecidosidae adults are usually short lived (Silva et al, 2018b), but the length of the stages of egg, four instars of larvae, and pupae are not known. Further studies on the natural history of E. minutanus are needed to understand the features of its life cycle (Loetti et al, 2016).…”
