Gallium-67 imaging in the diagnosis of blastomycosis

Abstract: 67Ga imaging was used in a group of 13 untreated patients with documented South American blastomycosis in an attempt to obtain additional information on the site and extent of the lesions. All diagnoses were confirmed by demonstration of the fungi in the lesions or body fluids. Serologic tests were performed on all patients. 67Ga imaging was correlated with X-ray in all patients, and with bone imaging when bony lesions were suspected. 67Ga imaging was positive for all lesions detected on chest X-ray and by cli… Show more

“…Table 2 presents the frequency of organic involvement (117,318), bone destruction, vascular system pathology, and even genital lesions (8,54). Scans making use of gallium-67 frequently reveal lesions that were not suspected clinically or radiologically (42,122).…”

“…The use of gallium-67 scans in patients with paracoccidioidomycosis and other mycosis has already been described [5][6][7]9 . GIORGI et al 9 , studying 13 patients with confirmed diagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis, have shown that whole body gallium-67 imaging is a useful tool for detection of suspected and unsuspected lesions of paracoccidioidomycosis and helps to evaluate the response of the disease to specific therapy.…”

These authors have shown good correlation between whole body gallium-67 scintigraphy and the clinical and laboratory findings.…”

“…For example, Giorgi MCP, et al have shown that all lesions of South American blastomycosis in 13 cases could be detected by whole body Ga-67 scintigraphy. 6 But its application in the detection of chromomycosis has not been reported yet.…”
