Gallbladder contractility: variation in normal subjects.

Abstract: These data show that a wide variation exists within a normal person in the degree of gallbladder contraction exhibited from one day to another, and a single test for gallbladder contraction can be misleading.

“…Radiologically the gallstone volume can be assessed using the ellipsoid formula. 24 While a cause and effect relationship cannot be substantiated with the present study, constant erosion of the gall bladder wall by gallstones over time may constitute a risk.…”

“…Pons et al [18] and Krishnamurthy et al [19] studied the reproducibility of GBEF by CCK CS on 44 subjects and 52 subjects respectively and found it reproducible with correlation coefficients of 0.439 and 0.73 respectively. On the other hand, Donald et al [16] studied gallbladder contractility in 30 healthy subjects by fatty meal ultrasonography and reported wide GBEF variability within each subject. However, their study focused on variability of GB volumes and GBEF values between and within the subjects.…”

“…Indeed, since gallstones are diagnosed mostly with US, it seems desirable to obtain as much information as possible with this procedure in order to assess the eligibility of patients for nonsurgical treatment. In particular, since a good gallbladder function seems to be a prerequisite for ESWL [3,4], the demonstration of impaired gallbladder emptying at US could help rule out this therapeutic option. In the present work, US determination of gallbladder emptying after ceruletide gave results comparable to OCG after fatty meal.…”

“…Since serial measurements are not easily affordable in clinical practice, a single measurement is generally performed at the presumed time of maximal contraction. However, a considerable degree of uncertainty exists, since some authors take such measurements 30 to 40 min after the meal [7; 9, 17], while others wait 45 to 60 min [3,9,12]. Such differences might depend on meal composition, but one should remember that meal-induced gallbladder contraction depends on several factors.…”
