Galectin‐3 is associated with severe heart failure and death: A hospital‐based study in Chinese patients

Abstract: Heart failure (HF) is a serious disease syndrome characterized by elevated proinflammatory cytokines and inflammatory mediators presume to have significant contribution on disease progression. Galectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins responsible of various physiological functions. Role of galectins in heart failure has been ill-defined. In the present case-controls study, 136 patients clinically diagnosed with heart failure and 125 healthy Chinese controls were recruited. Levels of galec-

“…In the pathogenesis of ICMP, the role of cardiomyocyte apoptosis, extracellular matrix (ECM) destruction with the participation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), matrix formation in the presence of transforming growth factor-beta (TGFβ), microvascular dysfunction, synthesis of collagens with different properties, autoimmune and other mechanisms is being discussed [4] , [5] , [6] , [7] . Galectin-3 is considered as a marker of myocardium damage, fibrosis and unfavorable course of CHD [8] , [9] , [10] , [11] , [12] , [13] , [14] . At the same time, it is known that at different stages of the post-infarct period, the leading positions in the mechanisms of remodeling of the affected myocardium are occupied by macrophages attracted to the focus by chemoattractants, for example, monocyte chemotactic factor (MCP-1).…”

“…Therefore, future studies should further investigate the roles and mechanisms of Gal-3 in myocardial fibrosis and HF. Although there have been many studies investigating the relationship between blood levels of Gal-3 and mortality in HF patients (40)(41)(42), the predictive value of Gal-3 for the prognosis of HF remains to be illusive (43). Recently, the PARADIGM-HF trial revealed that baseline and eight-month changes in serum Gal-3 levels did not predict outcomes in HFrEF patients (44).…”
