Galectin-3 increase in endurance athletes

Abstract: Plasma galectin-3 is substantially elevated in endurance athletes after running but does not correlate with cardiac function, other biomarkers, or myocardial fibrosis. In mice, we demonstrate that galectin-3 increase during endurance exercise originates primarily from skeletal muscle.

“…Absolute and per cent increments were comparable between patients and controls. Qualitatively similar changes have been reported recently after physical endurance training in healthy subjects [20,21]. Of particular note, the similar daytime pattern of Galectin-3 and COMP and their incremental responses to physical challenge [19] may reflect that there is a link between Galectin-3 and COMP.…”

“…As previously mentioned, veteran athletes show an increase in markers of plasma fibrosis. 64,111 Endomyocardial biopsies in athletes with ventricular arrhythmias have provided some insight into the arrhythmogenic substrate in humans. Dello Russo and colleagues observed fibro-fatty replacement in 5 of 13 athletes and active myocarditis foci in 7 of 13 athletes with symptomatic ventricular arrhythmias but no apparent structural heart disease.…”

“…Recently, Gal-3 has been shown as a helpful tool for better management of heart dysfunction [16], because its plasma level is strongly associated with changes in left ventricular structure and function. Its level also increases after different forms of physical activity [17][18][19], but there is no data on the effect of SCUBA diving on Gal-3 plasma concentration.…”
