Galaxy properties and the cosmic web in simulations

Abstract: We seek to understand the relationship between galaxy properties and their local environment, which calls for a proper formulation of the notion of environment. We analyse the GIMIC suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations within the framework of the cosmic web as formulated by Hoffman et al., focusing on properties of simulated DM haloes and luminous galaxies with respect to voids, sheets, filaments and knots -the four elements of the cosmic web. We find that the mass functions of haloes depend on env… Show more

“…Fig. 2 reproduces another well known relation, namely the correlation between the mass of haloes and their web environment (Cautun et al 2014;Metuki et al 2015, and references therein). It shows the mass function, ηµ(Mvir), for the four web environments.…”

“…This has allowed us to search for the impact of large-scale tidal forces on the galaxy population, and there have been a number of studies suggesting that an effect of this sort should be present. Metuki et al (2015) conducted a thorough analysis of galaxy properties within the cosmic web, finding significant dependences on location, which they attributed largely to the strong relationship between galaxy properties and the properties of their host haloes, which are in turn linked to their geometric environments. They found that the strong dependence of the halo mass function on the cosmic web was the main cause of the apparent dependence of galaxy properties.…”

“…There has been extensive work in quantifying and understanding the properties of the cosmic web from N-body simulations, as well as its interplay with various intrinsic halo and galaxy properties (Hahn et al 2007;Yan et al 2013;Forero-Romero et al 2014;Libeskind et al 2014;Nuza et al 2014;Metuki et al 2015) and a smaller number of groups have attempted similar studies on galaxy survey data (Bond et al 2010a;Eardley et al 2015;Chen et al 2015). Often this is done by using the galaxy number density in redshift space as a proxy for the real-space matter density.…”
