This article investigates Paul's use of the term οἱ δοκοῦντες in the letter to the Galatians. Firstly, the term is considered from the standpoint of lexical semantics. Secondly, select relevant parallels from Ancient Greek literature are adduced and studied comparatively. Based on these considerations, it is argued that Paul uses οἱ δοκοῦντες as a rhetorical device, whereby he distances himself from the Jerusalem leaders and, in so doing, turns his opponents' argument against them.

In Galatians Paul is defending the "Truth of the Gospel" (Galatians 2:5.14) and fighting against the work of rival missionaries who were perverting the Christian message in those communities. Paul was aware that many of his arguments and propositions could lead to false conclusions. To avoid doubts and persuade his readers about the Truth, one of the resources that Paul uses is to ask questions and answer them in order to anticipate the false conclusions that his readers might draw from his propositions. These questions of the hypothetical interlocutor, generally considered absurd, are answered with a vehement "by no means!" (μὴ γένοιτο). In this work we seek to investigate the use of this expression in Galatians by comparing it with its use in Greek literature (biblical and extrabiblical) in order to achieve greater clarity of the meaning of the expression in Galatians. Scholars have sought an answer to Paul's use of μὴ γένοιτο in Epictetus (50-135 AD), however, the thesis of this research is that the answer can be found in the "greek orators" before Paul. We believe that this topic is relevant since there is almost no specific bibliography regarding the use of the expression μὴ γένοιτο, and the one that exists is restricted to its use in the diatribe.

Suffering in Vain: A Study of the Interpretation of ΠΑΣΧΩ in Galatians 3.4

Modern scholarship is divided on the interpretation of πάσχω in Gal. 3.4, and there has yet to be a deﬁnitive study on the subject attempting to rectify the disagreements. The clear consensus prior to the late seventeenth century was that πάσχω possessed negative connotations in this passage. This interpretation was briefly challenged by Justus Christoph Schomer (1648–1693), influencing the majority of German scholarship and creating a major polarity among scholars in the English-speaking world. After making this history of interpretation known, the present study tries to demonstrate that, lexically, thematically and contextually, the preferable interpretation regards πάσχω as a reference to suffering, in keeping with the longstanding interpretative tradition.
