Galactoglucomannans Increase Cell Population Density and Alter the Protoxylem/Metaxylem Tracheary Element Ratio in Xylogenic Cultures of Zinnia

Abstract: Xylogenic cultures of zinnia (Zinnia elegans) provide a unique opportunity to study signaling pathways of tracheary element (TE) differentiation. In vitro TEs differentiate into either protoxylem (PX)-like TEs characterized by annular/helical secondary wall thickening or metaxylem (MX)-like TEs with reticulate/scalariform/pitted thickening. The factors that determine these different cell fates are largely unknown. We show here that supplementing zinnia cultures with exogenous galactoglucomannan oligosaccharide… Show more

“…Heteromannans are also proposed to act as regulators of growth and development (Auxtová et al, 1995;Bilisics et al, 2004;Benová-Kákosová et al, 2006). The heteromannan backbone is synthesized by cellulose synthase-like A (CSLA) glycan synthases (Liepman et al, 2005(Liepman et al, , 2007Suzuki et al, 2006).…”

“…The most dramatic examples of extracellular modification occur during the differentiation of tracheary elements and fibers, which synthesize an elaborate, lignified secondary cell wall between the primary cell wall and the plasma membrane (Ros Barceló 1997). Increasing evidence supports the notion that cell wall modifications and information molecules derived from cell walls participate in fundamental developmental mechanisms (Beňová-Kákošová et al 2006). Proteins that are involved in the generation of wall-derived signals or cell-wall modifications during secondary growth have been described recently (Demura and Fukuda 2006).…”

“…Galactoglucomannan-derived oligosaccharides also appear to elicit growth and developmental responses when applied to a variety of plant tissues and cell cultures Liskova et al, 1995;Bilisics et al, 2004;Benova-Kakosova et al, 2006). Little is known about the roles mannans play in these processes or the mechanisms of their involvement.…”
