Galactic model parameters for field giants separated from field dwarfs by their 2MASS and V apparent magnitudes

Abstract: Abstract. We present a procedure which separates field dwarfs and field giants by their 2MASS and V apparent magnitudes. The procedure is based on the spectroscopically selected standards, hence it is confident. We applied this procedure to stars in two fields, SA 54 and SA 82, and we estimated a full set of Galactic model parameters for giants including their total local space density. Our results are in agreement with the ones appeared recently in the literature.

“…Effective temperatures were calculated from the empirical calibration of Ramírez & Meléndez (2005), based on Tycho and 2MASS photometry. Rough estimates of log g were obtained using the results of Bilir et al (2006) and Gelino et al (2005). For all these stars, the average value of [Fe/H] obtained for the 332 stars with complete spectroscopic analysis, [Fe/H] = −0.15, was assumed (bottom part of Table 5).…”

“…Then, we plotted them onto the V 0 − J 0 two magnitude diagram ( Fig. 13) and separated the giants (RC stars) from the dwarfs by the procedure of Bilir et al (2006a). It turned out that 101 stars were classified as RC stars.…”

“…We adopted a mean absolute magnitude M g = 1.5 for giants and we calculated their corresponding distance from the Galactic plane, z = 4.5 kpc, for g 0 = 15. We used the local space density D * = 6.35 and the scaleheight (H = 650 pc) for the thick disc dwarfs and we compared the corresponding space density with that of thick disc giants for local space density D * = 5.58 and the scaleheight (H = 585 pc) adopted from Bilir et al (2006c). It turned out that the number of thick disc giants fainter than g 0 = 15 mag is less than 8% of the number of dwarfs.…”
