Gaines–thomas and rothmund–kornfeld descriptions of potassium–calcium exchange on variable surface charge soils

Abstract: The empirical Rothmund -Kornfeld power function approach (in terms of equivalent fractions) was applied to potassium -calcium (K -Ca) exchange equilibrium carried out at 258C and 0.05 M ionic strength on 4 soils derived from volcanic materials in southern Chile. Results were compared with those obtained by the Gaines -Thomas approach, where a K preference was observed in all samples, with equilibrium constant values ranging from 0.097 to 0.492. The equivalent fraction form of Rothmund -Kornfeld fit the exchang… Show more

“…Regarding ion exchange reactions, the Rothmund-Kornfeld description has been found to be applicable in numerous cases (e.g. Bond and Verburg, 1997;Escudey et al, 2001;Reynolds and Tardiff, 2015). As reported by Bond (1995), it appears more accurate because it avoids extrapolation of the data required for the thermodynamic approach.…”

“…A thorough understanding of cation exchange reactions is necessary to predict nutrient dynamics in soils and buffering of protons. There has been much research on cation exchange reactions and pH buffering in homogenized soils and repacked soil columns (Curtin et al ., 1998; Ludwig et al ., 1998a,b; Voegelin et al ., 2000; Escudey et al ., 2001). For instance, Ludwig et al .…”

“…Approximations such as Gaines and Thomas (Gaines and Thomas 1953) and Rothmund-Kornfeld (Bond 1995) have been used to gain an insight into the exchange behaviour characteristics, mainly of Andepts and other inorganic fractions of soils in Chile. (Escudey and Galindo 1988;Escudey et al 1997Escudey et al , 2001Escudey et al , 2002Salazar et al 2002). However, these approximations have been applied on soils with high Na and saline content, which might turn binary equilibria into ternary ones.…”
