Gain and coherence effects induced by strong cw-laser coupling in potassium–rare-gas mixtures

Abstract: We describe theoretical and experimental investigations of steady-state gain without population inversion that can occur on the D 1 transition of potassium, upon strong cw-laser excitation of the D 2 transition. A Raman-driven four-level model, in which a noninverted population in the 4 2 P 1/2 level is established via collisional transfer from the 4 2 P 3/2 level, is in good qualitative agreement with a variety of experimental results. These results include, among other studies, an examination of the impact o… Show more

“…This example shows clearly that it is possible to inhibit a nonlinear continuous evolution process, e.g. the photon polarization rotation, [60] Cd vapour cell ( ) 326 479 0.68 CW AWI Streater (1994, 1996) [80,81] by a frequent measurement process, e.g. the wavefunction collapse produced by the vertical polarizers.…”

“…As for the V-type scheme in 85 Rb, the incoherent optical pumping schemes needed to invert the population at the driven transition and to pump some population to the upper ␣-laser level could be implemented in the following way, inspired in the nice papers by Kleinfeld and Streater ͓14,15͔ reporting experiments on potassium-rare-gas mixtures. The relevant 85 Rb energy levels are shown in Fig.…”

“…To date, several experiments [8][9][10][11] have been conducted showing that inversionless lasing is in fact feasible. However, the lasing wavelengths were not significantly shorter than the driving fields' wavelengths.…”
