Fuzzy perceptual filtering for still image compression

Abstract: In this paper we describe the application of a fuzzy perceptual classifier to improve still image encoding. A weighted low-pass filtering is applied before standard compression algorithms, which blurs image pixels according to their perceptual relevance. This results in a reduction of the number of bits required to encode an image without reducing perceived quality.
