Future of TCP on Wi-Fi 6

Abstract: The Linux TCP/IP stack contributions have recently pointed all in the same direction: maximize the available throughput while maintaining low latency. These activities started by mitigating the buffebloat phenomenon at the network bottleneck as much as possible. So far, the deployed solutions have been designed by considering standard models for the bottleneck that could be either wireless or wired. The introduction of Wi-Fi 6 is dislocating the bottleneck of standard home and office WLAN from the radio access… Show more

“…1 With the increasing proliferation of real-time video and other communication services, due to the constraints of the inherent structure of TCP / IP, the ability of Internet to transmit and process these real-time multimedia data is facing more and more challenges, which is reflected in low efficiency and poor user experience. 2,3 Information-centric networking (ICN) breaks the host-centric connection mode of TCP/IP and becomes an information-centric mode. 4 ICN will change the current end-to-end communication mechanism of the Internet, separate the content from the terminal location, and provide services such as storage and multi-communication through publish or subscribe paradigm.…”

“…The current Internet architecture is a peer‐to‐peer connection based on packet exchange between terminals 1 . With the increasing proliferation of real‐time video and other communication services, due to the constraints of the inherent structure of TCP / IP, the ability of Internet to transmit and process these real‐time multimedia data is facing more and more challenges, which is reflected in low efficiency and poor user experience 2,3 . “…Examples include Tahoe, Reno, New Reno, and TCP Vegas [101]-[103]. These algorithms use mechanisms like slow start, congestion avoidance, fast transmitted, and fast recovery to regulate the transmission rate based on network congestion signals such as packet loss and round-trip time[104]. In Table4below, it discusses some congestion control algorithms, their functionality and how they affect performance[105]-[109].…”
