Future directions of operative neuro-oncology

Abstract: Recent technological advancements have drastically improved the safety and surgical precision of operative neuro-oncology. These include techniques for avoiding critical functional structures through pre-operative mapping and trajectory planning, as well the development and refinement of minimally invasive surgical approaches. Innovations in intra-operative tumor mapping, and post-resection tumor ablation have further combined to improve surgical outcomes. This review highlights such advancements and discusses… Show more

“…Patient-specific surgical planning based on individual anatomical characteristics is an important element in current and future neurosurgery. [20][21][22][23][24] In brain tumor surgery, all patients have different tumors, in terms of size, location, extent, and characteristics, and thus personalized surgical plans are required for each patient. Despite using the most advanced neuronavigation systems for neurosurgery, neurosurgeons still require a lot of experience and training to derive an idea of the 3D reconstruction of lesions and structures from 2D data using their imagination.…”

“…Based on the evaluation completed in [45], better visualization techniques which differentiate between arteries and veins and ascertain the absolute depth of a vessel of interest are required for more complicated anomalies such as arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and arteriovenous fistulae (AVF); however, AR is favourable technology in neuro-vascular surgery. To conclude, there is no universal method for reporting navigation accuracy in augmented reality neuro-navigation; comparative studies, however, still need to be assessed to identify its effectiveness [49].…”

“…Such extended surgical durations not only predispose patients to significant fluctuations in body temperature but also require maintaining a fixed position for extended periods. 1,2 This immobility, in turn, exerts sustained pressure on specific areas of the skin, particularly those overlying bony prominences, leading to localized damage. The cumulative effect of these factors significantly heightens the risk of developing pressure ulcers during the surgical process, presenting a notable challenge in the perioperative management of neurosurgical patients.…”

“…These procedures frequently require extended periods of surgical intervention, during which patients are subjected to prolonged periods of immobility. Such extended surgical durations not only predispose patients to significant fluctuations in body temperature but also require maintaining a fixed position for extended periods 1,2 . This immobility, in turn, exerts sustained pressure on specific areas of the skin, particularly those overlying bony prominences, leading to localized damage.…”
