Summary Supercritical CO2 (sCO2) has been proven to be a promising working fluid for geothermal heat mining, and the produced hot sCO2 can be directly used for power generation. However, the sCO2 produced from a brine‐based reservoir may contain a certain amount of water, preventing direct power‐cycle utilization. In this paper, an axial vane separator was designed to address the separation problem of sCO2 and water produced from geothermal reservoirs. First, the influences of operational and structural parameters on the separation performance were analyzed through numerical simulations. Five factors were selected to develop separation performance regression models by the response‐surface method (RSM). Finally, geometrical parameter optimization was applied to these RSM models. The results show that the guide vane area and the exhaust inlet are the main locations impacting the system pressure drop. The separation performance can be affected by many factors, including the guide blade outlet angle, number of vanes, hub diameter, length of the vortex tube, droplet size, and inlet velocity. The water‐droplet size and the number of vanes are the most critical factors affecting the separation efficiency. The inlet velocity, the number of vanes, and the hub diameter have a larger influence on the pressure drop of the separator. The optimization results indicate that the separation efficiency can reach 100% under certain operating conditions with a pressure drop no greater than 100 kPa.

Environmental Stress Testing for China’s Overseas Coal Power Investment Project

The advance of the Chinese “Belt and Road” initiative encourages increased overseas investment in coal power projects. However, it also brings about external environmental risks. In this paper, we use the approach of environmental stress testing to examine China’s overseas coal power investment projects by focusing on two countries: Indonesia and Vietnam. We first identify five key testing factors (i.e., coal price, utilization hours, exchange rate, carbon tax, and environmental protection requirements) by examining the market regulation and the environmental risks of coal power projects along the “Belt and Road” countries. Then, we observed changes in the enterprise value and internal rate of return (IRR) by setting different scenarios in which the values of the five stress factors varied. The results show that (1) the economics of coal-fired projects in Indonesia is most sensitive to exchange rate, while the economics of coal projects in Vietnam is most sensitive to coal price; (2) the pressure of nationally determined contributions (NDC) goals on environmental protection will push the “Belt and Road” countries to implement more stringent environmental regulation, which will reinforce environmental stress on overseas coal power investment. These results have important policy implications for the enterprise, industry, and Chinese government.

Vietnam's Power Development Plan 7A authorized many new coal power plants projects, implying an increase of greenhouse gases emissions from 90 MtCO2eq/year today to 360 MtCO2eq/year in 2030. How could co-firing technology-that is the partial substitution of coal by biomass-contributes to mitigate that problem? In this study, we assess the costs and potentials of co-firing rice residues in present and planned coal power plants in Vietnam using a spatially explicit optimization model: BeWhere, adapted as recursive annual dynamic. We found that, the cost of CO2 emissions is the key parameter determining at what level the technology is used. A cost of CO2 emissions of 8 $/tCO2 mobilizes the maximum technical potential of the rice straw and husk domestic resource, with an annual emission reduction of 28 MtCO2eq/year by 2030. At this level, biomass co-firing contributes to an 8% emission reduction in the coal power sector with the abatement cost of 137 Million USD.
