Future Biomarkers for Infection and Inflammation in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) increases the susceptibility to a variety of infections that are often difficult to diagnose and can be asymptomatic or symptoms are atypical. Usually, this is a great challenge for rheumatologists, because it is difficult to distinguish infection and aseptic inflammation at an early stage. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of bacterial infections in immunosuppressed individuals is critical for clinicians, and early exclusion of infection allows for specific treatment of inflammatory dis… Show more

“… 36 Also, the positive correlation between lipocalin-2 CRP and ESR is attributed to the fact that they are considered important inflammatory indicators, and their production is stimulated by pro-inflammatory cytokines that play an important role in causing arthritis. 12 , 37 Lipocalin-2 promotes neutrophils to release pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukins, tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) proteins are activated as well as LCN2 levels have been associated with an increased inflammatory environment of bone. Consequently, serious illnesses may result from neutrophil malfunction.…”
