Future Applications of VANETs

Abstract: Current transportation systems face great challenges due to the increasing mobility. Traffic accidents, congestion, air pollution, etc., are all calling for new methods to improve the transportation system. With the US legislation in progress over vehicle communications and EU's finalization of the basic set of standards over cooperative intelligent transportation systems (C-ITS), vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) based applications are expected to address those challenges and provide solutions for a safer, mor… Show more

“…We define a cluster partition as a set of non-overlapping clusters that includes all the vehicles within the network. In the following, we consider only cluster partitions with clusters 1 For the given example application (constant uploading of Floating Car Data), every vehicle will be constantly sending its position information through the Base Station to a distant server. This is exactly what very wellknown mobile map applications do when collecting information about an user's daily trips.…”

“…V EHICULAR connectivity has a major role in the development of smart cities, making travelling safer and providing real-time information that allows for an optimized traffic management, potentially reducing travel times, waiting times and the ecological footprint [1]. Every vehicle becomes a source of valuable information, while it takes advantage of the established communication to provide passengers with new infotainment services.…”

“…An effective VANET can enable high safety and traffic management, for the vehicle transportation [7]. But in this VANET some malicious nodes may interrupt the smooth communication, by creating issues like false data propagation, message suppression and denial of service [8,9]. In order to provide the secure data delivery, the researchers have proposed many systems including secure crash reporting, safety message sharing and cooperative collision avoidance etc.…”

“…Moreover, real-time traffic information can also be used to avoid traffic jams. Many other applications of VANETs have been developed [3]. In addition, VANETs have been regarded as one of the major technologies to support most future Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) [4].…”
