FUTEBOL Control Framework: Enabling Experimentation in Convergent Optical, Wireless, and Cloud Infrastructures

Abstract: Large-scale testing and evaluation of network solutions are complex and typically involve multiple domains (e.g., optical, wireless, and cloud). The FUTEBOL project has deployed geographically distributed testbeds in Brazil and Europe that enable the experimentation and validation of new cross-domain network solutions. In this article, we introduce a Control Framework that allows experimenters to slice, reserve, and orchestrate optical, wireless, and cloud resources in a coordinated manner. We illustrate the f… Show more

“…Their experimentation in the testbed confirmed feasibility of the proposed algorithms. Another realistic approach which primarily includes experimenting on testbeds, although here resource sharing is intended in the more general sense of testbed federation, is recently presented by Both et al [172]. Their solution encompasses multiple geographically distributed testbeds, used to orchestrate resources and to automatically scale services across multiple domains (wireless, optical, and cloud) [172].…”

“…An important and promising approach to support diverse experimental scenarios across multiple domains and testbeds was introduced in the previous paragraph. Namely, Both et al [172] introduced inter-domain and inter-technology Control Framework to bridge the gap between optical, wireless, and cloud domains, enabling orchestration of diverse network resources.…”

“…Finalmente, quando funções de rede necessitem de recursos específicos (tais como suporte a SR-IOV, GPU, DPDK, por exemplo) pode-se precisar instanciar funções de rede em outros domínios, onde tais recursos estão disponíveis. Um exemplo são os testbeds especializados e autônomos, disponibilizados pelo consórcio BR-EU FUTE-BOL [Both et al 2019] em diferentes regiões do Brasil e da Europa.…”

“…They can serve as platforms to experiment new services, as well as to enhance the use of services and protocols that are currently in production. Usually, the goal of testbeds is to enable a wide variety of experiments for the development, deployment, and validation of transformative solutions including clean-slate networking, protocol design and evaluation, content management, and in-network service deployment [Both et al 2019].…”
