Fusion of8He with206Pb around Coulomb barrier energies

Abstract: Abstract. The experimental study of the fusion of light neutron-rich nucleus 8 He with 206 Pb is reported in this work. A fusion stack of 206 Pb targets has been used for this study. The most prominent evaporation residue ( 210 Po), which has half-life of 138 days and decays by alpha emission, is populated in the reaction. Radiochemical analysis technique is used to extract the yield of this evaporation residue.

“…An explanation for this difference was given in terms of mixing of bound and unbound levels in 199 Au. Fusion of 8 He with 206 Pb was studied by Parkar et al [54] at energies near the Coulomb barrier, using a radiochemical technique with stacked targets of 206 Pb separated by mylar and Al spacers. The yield of the 210 Po evaporation residue (half-life of 138 days) was counted off-line after the Pb targets were dissolved and a 209 Po tracer was added.…”

“…Fusion-like events are characterized by a beam-like trace followed by a sudden jump in the energy loss in a specific strip due to the larger charge of the evaporation residue. Experimental fusion traces for the 17 F + 12 C system occurring in strip 7 are shown by the red lines in Fig. 2.…”

“…Fusion measurements are a key component of research in nuclear structure, nuclear reactions and nuclear astrophysics [1]. For example, the 12 C + 12 C fusion reaction determines the burning conditions and subsequent isotopic composition of the resulting ashes in massive stars [2]. Furthermore, in neutron-rich stars fusion of exotic carbon and oxygen isotopes may act as catalyzers for the so called x-ray superbursts [3].…”

“…Then the fusion cross-section of 8 He + 65 Cu reaction has been reported by Lemasson et al [3]. Both theoretical and experimental studies for understanding the fusion processes of halo nuclei 6 He [4-7] and 8 He [8,9] can be found in the literature.…”
