Fusidic acid betamethasone lipid cream

Abstract: Bacterial infections of the skin and soft tissues are frequent disorders. They can be primitive infections (e.g. impetigo, folliculitis) or secondary infections complicating other diseases, particularly atopic dermatitis. The most common aetiologic agent is Staphylococcus aureus. Topical antibiotic therapy may be sufficient in many instances to control these infections. Fusidic acid is an antibiotic used topically on the skin which is very active against S. aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains, and … Show more

“…As an effective antibiotic, FA is often used to treat diseases, including skin and soft tissue infections, acute osteomyelitis, septic arthritis and other device related infections, which are caused by S. aureus [ 5 ]. Being extracted from cultures of fusidium coccineum , FA inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by preventing the turnover of fusA encoded elongation factor G (EF-G) from the ribosome [ 6 , 7 ]. Point mutations in this chromosomal gene usually lead to the high level resistance of FA [ 8 ].…”

“…This functional group is part of a diverse family of drugs, exemplified by the fact that a significant number (>450) of marketed drugs are carboxylic acid containing molecules [1a]. Example drugs include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), -lactam antibiotics [2], anticoagulants such as aspirin (which contains salicylic acid) and the eczema/dermatitis treatment betafucin (which contains fusidic acid) [3]. Nevertheless, despite the success of some carboxylic acid-containing drugs, the presence of this polar moiety can often be a disadvantage [4].…”
