Fusarium soloni mycetoma

Abstract: A young apparently healthy, non-diabetic, HIV non-reactive woman presented with a mycetoma-like lesion on right buttock. Discharge was scanty, and mycotic grains were not seen. Biopsy of sinus track was obtained for microscopy and culture. Microscopic examination revealed plenty of fungal hyphae in direct microscopic examination of grounded tissues in saline; KOH, Gram's, and H and E-stained smears. All the three inoculated slants of Sabouraud's media yielded heavy growth of Fusarium solani. Presence of numero… Show more

“…Regarding hyaline fungi, Scedosporium boydii (Syn: Scedosporium apiospermum , Pseudallescheria boydii ), was the foremost isolated strain (similar to other studies) [6], [11], [24], [26]. Mycetomas due to Fusarium have been previously described [39], [40], we found F. solani in two cases; interestingly, one of them was microscopically classified as F. chlamydosporum , but was reclassified using molecular biology as part of the Fusarium solani complex (CBS 135554). One case resulted from infection with Aspergillus nidulans , an agent rarely reported [41] and identified morphologically for the presence of Hülle cells.…”

Fifty-four patients were male and 41 female (sex was not reported in 2 cases).…”

“…Other bacterial species implicated in mycetoma are Actinomadura latina , Gordonia terrae , Nocardia farcinica , Nocardia harenae , Nocardia mexicana , Nocardia transvalensis , Nocardia veterana , Nocardia yamanashiensis , Nocardiopsis dassonvillei and Streptomyces sudanensis [1] , [14] , [75] , [76] , [77] , [78] , [79] , [80] , [81] , [82] , [83] . Other fungal species implicated in mycetoma are Acremonium recifei , Cladophialophora bantiana , Corynespora cassiicola , Curvularia geniculata , Diaporthe phaseolorum , Fusarium oxysporum , Gibberella fujikuroi (synonym: Fusarium monoliforme ), Haematonectria haematococca (synonym: Fusarium solani ), Ilyonectria destructans (synonym: Cylindrocarpon destructans ), Falciformispora tompkinsii (synonym: Leptosphaeria tompkinsii ), Madurella fahalii , Madurella pseudomycetomatis , Madurella tropicana , Microsporum canis , Phaeoacremonium parasiticum , Phialophora cyanescens (synonym: Cylindrocarpon cyanescens ), Phialophora verrucosa , Pleurostomophora ochracea , Pseudochaetosphaeronema larense , Rhinocladiella atrovirens , Sarocladium kiliense (synonym: Acremonium kiliense ), Setosphaeria rostrata (synonym: Exserohilum rostrata ) [1] , [15] , [16] , [84] , [85] , [86] , [87] , [88] , [89] , [90] , [91] , [92] , [93] , [94] , [95] , [96] , [97] , [98] . Since most of these species are only found in case studies, these are probably only rarely associated with mycetoma, if associated at all.…”
