“…'experiential' because it consists mostly in the attempt to reconstruct, to understand, and to make more explicit the experiences that the testee underwent in taking the test and his reaction to these experiences, specifically his way of approaching or avoiding and of handling the experience of the inkblots in the context of the test task" (p. 4). Lerner (1992Lerner ( , 2004) broadened Schachtel's (1966) experiential approach to the Rorschach by first distinguishing between two different types of interpretative approaches to Rorschach data, and then identifying processes involved in an experiential approach. One interpretive approach, according to Lerner (1992), is a structural approach.…”

“…For instance, I became interested in extending and broadening Schachtel's formulations regarding an experiential approach to Rorschach assessment. This led to subsequent articles (Lerner, 1992(Lerner, , 1996(Lerner, , 1998 on the clinical inference process, Rorschach interpretation, and the roles of empathy and reflection in interpretation. Furthermore, it also seemed to me that as part of developing a contemporary and comprehensive psychoanalytic Rorschach psychology, one 8 LERNER commensurate with the theoretical shifts taking place, Schachtel's work had to be integrated with Rapaport's.…”
