Further experience with transcatheter closure of the patent ductus arteriosus using the Amplatzer duct occluder

Abstract: Transcatheter closure using the ADO is an effective and safe therapy for the majority of patients with patency of the arterial duct. Further studies are required to establish long-term results in a larger patient population.

“…6 The results of our study of percutaneous PDA closure with the Amplatzer duct occluder, with an occlusion rate of 100% at 24 hours, concurs with results reported in other studies. 7,8,9 Our success rate is similar to Egyptian study, there success rate is 98.4%. 10 Overall PDA closure rate was 94% and major adverse events were 1.5 %.…”

“…The world experience with this prosthesis grows exponentially [18][19][20][21][22] . In the last meeting of the participants in multicenter studies of the Amplatzer prostheses (for ductus arteriosus, atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, and persistence of the oval foramen) held in Strasbourg, France, in June 2000, the number of cases of closure of the ductus arteriosus was close to 1,000.…”

“…The prosthesis is available in 5 combinations of diameters in 7mm or 8mm lengths. The profile of the sheath ranges form 5 Fr to 7 Fr, according to the diameter selected [1][2][3][4][5] . A great technical advantage of this implantation system is the possibility of rescuing the prosthesis inside the sheath, if its location is not adequate, before its final delivery, and this procedure is totally controlled by the operator.…”

“…A great technical advantage of this implantation system is the possibility of rescuing the prosthesis inside the sheath, if its location is not adequate, before its final delivery, and this procedure is totally controlled by the operator. The world clinical experience and that in Brazil show a 100% efficacy for occlusion of ductus arteriosus with very low indices of complications [2][3][4][5] . Due to the favorable characteristics of the system, this prosthesis has also been used to occlude other vascular structures [6][7][8] .…”
