Further evidence of a positive correlation between exposure to nitrate fertilizers (NaNO3 and KNO3) and gastric cancer death rates: Nitrites and nitrosamines

Abstract: Mean age-adjusted death rates for gastric cancer in Chile for 1960, 1962 and 1964 were associated with exposure to sodium nitrate and nitrates (NaNO3 and KNO3) used as fertilizers, by province. The general population exposure to NaNO3 and nitrates exhibited correlation coefficients of 0.745 and 0.718 with the death rates, respectively.

“…N-nitroso-compounds can be formed endogenously in humans; they have been identified in vivo in the stomach, in the infected urinary bladder and in saliva and faeces [Fraser et al, 1980]. In epidemiological studies, gastric cancer risk was linked to nitrogen (fertilizer) usage in Chile [Armijo & Coulson, 1975;Zaldivar, 1977;Zaldivar & Wetterstrand, 1975] and to the nitrate concentration in well-water in Colombia [Cuello et al, 1976;Tannenbaum et al, 1979]. Case-control studies in Japan and among Japanese migrants to Hawaii [Haenszel et al, 1972] have linked gastric cancer risk to certain food items, and to well-water use in Japan ].…”

“…In the mid-1970s, researchers observed a correlation between the application of nitrate fertilisers per hectare of arable land and the mortality rate from gastric cancer in Chile (Armijo & Coulson, 1975;Zaldívar & Wetterstrand, 1975;Zaldívar, 1977). A study conducted in Kashmir revealed that 22.3 % of gastric cancer cases were attributable to soil contamination, with 21.6 % and 38.6 % of patients reporting frequent contact with fertilisers and pesticides (Bhat et al, 2015).…”
