Further evidence for CCN aerosol concentrations determining the height of warm rain and ice initiation in convective clouds over the Amazon basin

Abstract: Abstract. We have investigated how aerosols affect the height above cloud base of rain and ice hydrometeor initiation and the subsequent vertical evolution of cloud droplet size and number concentrations in growing convective cumulus. For this purpose we used in situ data of hydrometeor size distributions measured with instruments mounted on HALO aircraft during the ACRIDICON-CHUVA campaign over the Amazon during September 2014. The results show that the height of rain initiation by collision and coalescence p… Show more

“…To convert between organic carbon and organic matter (OM), a default OM/OC mass ratio of 1.6 is used in the absence of specific information. This value is based on the data from fresh biomass smoke aerosol in the literature (Turpin and Lim, 2001;Aiken et al, 2008;Yokelson et al, 2009;Takahama et al, 2011;Kostenidou et al, 2013;Brito et al, 2014;Collier et al, 2016;Fang et al, 2017;Tkacik et al, 2017;Ahern et al, 2019;Lim et al, 2019). Where only O/C ratios were given, they were converted to OM/OC ratios using the relationship given in Aiken et al (2008).…”

“…For example, recent Amazon aircraft studies as in Braga et al (2017) indicate changes such as an absence of liquid within growing convective cumulus during polluted conditions, and/or differences in the relative formation/altitudes of ice par-10 ticles. Regardless of process path, the suggestion is that polluted convective columns would be those that potentially promote added ice depositional growth (resulting in fewer, but larger ice particles at the expense of additional liquid).…”

“…A similar response may also be attributed to the proposed role of aerosols in fol- lowing invigoration arguments (e.g., Rosenfeld et al, 2008).
