Further evidence concerning the Belbin Team Role Self‐perception Inventory

Abstract: Against the background of a recent investigation into the internal reliability and the validity of the Belbin Team Role Self‐perception Inventory, two linked studies were undertaken. In the first, test‐retest reliabilities of the Belbin self‐perception inventory were measured and found to be unsatisfactory; in the second, correlations with team roles forecast on the basis of 16PF data were attempted and, with the exception of one team role, no substantial correlations were established. Provides support for the… Show more

“…Different correlation values were taken as ‘dramatic evidence of the type of distortion which use of an ipsative instrument produces’ (p. 401). Similarly, Fisher et al. (1996) looked at the correspondence between the TRSPI and 16PF and found low correlation values on the validity diagonal.…”

“…Fisher and colleagues generated a stream of research on team roles using personality questionnaires. Three of their studies have been concerned with the validity and reliability of team roles derived from 16PF (Fisher et al., 1996, 1998a, 2001a). Fisher et al.…”

“…Poor reliability and poor convergent and discriminant validity have been reported for the self-perception inventory (SPI) (Broucek & Randell, 1996;Fisher, MacRosson, & Sharp, 1996;Furnham, Steele, & Pendleton, 1993). Aritzeta, Swailes, and Senior (2007) found adequate convergent validity for the SPI, but found strong associations and cross-loadings between some of the team roles.…”

“…Why They Succeed or Fail (Belbin, 1981). However, subsequent investigation (Furnham et al, 1993a, b;Belbin, 1993b;Fisher et al, 1996;Broucek and Randell, 1996) of the ipsative self-perception team role inventory led to the recommendation (Broucek and Randell, 1996) that it not be used for the derivation of Belbin team role scores. Not all users of and investigators into Belbin's team role theory have been mindful of the recommendation (Arroba and Wedgwood-Oppenheim, 1994;Lessem and Baruch, 2000;Partington and Harris, 1999;Senior, 1997Senior, , 1998Senior and Swales, 1998;Shi and Tang, 1997;Watkins and Gibson-Sweet, 1997).…”

“…In earlier studies of the Belbin theory (Fisher et al, 1996) the issue was raised over the appropriateness of employing university undergraduate students as subjects in the investigation. It was noted then that current practice among most employers was to recruit managers almost exclusively from the ranks of newly graduated university students.…”
