Th e genus Ferula L., with 180 -185 species, is one of the largest genera of the Umbelliferae (Apiaceae). It is distributed in the ancient Mediterranean fl orogenetic area extending from Macaronesia, northeast Africa and the Iberian Peninsula to middle Asia, China and western Himalaya. One hundred and seventy-fi ve species occur in Asia; the biodiversity centers being in central Asia, Iran and Afghanistan. Th e presently adopted classifi cation of Ferula by E. P. Korovin is based on leaf, synfl orescence, fl ower and fruit morphology, as well as some ecological considerations. Among fruit anatomical characters only the number of vittae (secretory ducts) was used to divide Ferula into six subgenera, one of which is Merwia . Fruit anatomy and morphology will be useful for a taxonomic revision of Ferula . In the present study, free-hand and microtome sections of mericarps were studied with light microscopy, and fruit surfaces with SEM. Twenty-two species, attributed to the subgenus Merwia as well as Ferula ghorana , were studied for the fi rst time. Th e species diff er from one another in the presence/absence of an indumentum, hair morphology and surface structure, position and number of vittae and vascular bundles, degree of development of marginal ribs, the presence or absence in the mesocarp of an outer collenchymatous layer and an inner mechanical layer. Th e studied species were divided into six carpological groups. Th e results suggest that the subgenus is not a natural monophyletic taxon. It is suggested that the name Merwia should be reserved for a small section which includes Ferula litwinowiana and the closest desert species, while other species of Merwia may be classifi ed in several oligotypic sections. Ferula decurrens and F. mogoltavica have erroneously been regarded as having an affi nity with F. litwinowiana.

The biologically active coumarins from Ferula L. species of the family Apiaceae Lindl. for the period 1970 to 2022 have been reviewed. The phytochemical investigation of different parts of Ferula L., including gum resin, leaves, fruits, seeds, roots, rhizomes, and resins led to the separation of different types of coumarins. Nearly 185 coumarins were isolated from 35 species of Ferula L. growing in different countries. Coumarins are represented mainly by umbelliferone (7-O-hydroxycoumarin) derivatives substituted in the C-7 position of aglycone, furanocoumarins and metabolites have terpene fragments, esters and glycosides. Umbelliferon is found as a taxon for the genus Ferula L. Some «unusual» metabolites have a furan fragment attached to the pyrone ring. Coumarins are of the psoralen type, containing a furan ring in the C-6 and C-7 positions of the primary skeleton. The rare coumarins with terpene fragments (hemiterpene, monoterpen, sesquiterpene) were reported. The biological activities of some extracts and individual metabolites such as antiinflammatory, cytotoxicity, antibacterial, antileishmanial, antiviral, antigenotoxic, antitumor, anticoagulant, antioxidant, antimycobacterial, inhibition a-glucosidase, antileishmanial were found.
