Fungal Nomenclature: Managing Change is the Name of the Game

Abstract: Fungal species have undergone and continue to undergo significant nomenclatural change, primarily due to the abandonment of dual species nomenclature in 2013 and the widespread application of molecular technologies in taxonomy allowing correction of past classification errors. These have effected numerous name changes concerning medically important species, but by far the group causing most concern are the Candida yeasts. Among common species, Candida krusei, Candida glabrata, Candida guilliermondii, Candida l… Show more

“…This yeast species is commonly seen in fermented food products like alcohols ( Arastehfar et al., 2019 ; Van Rijswijck et al, 2019 ), and has also been used for treatment of waste water with a long history ( Kato et al., 1997 ). The species has now been assigned within the Wickerhamomycetaceae clade ( Kidd et al., 2023 ). Within this clade, there are several other species that have been reported to cause human infections, such as Wickerhamomyces anomalus and Cyberlindnera jadinii ( Treguier et al., 2018 ; Zhang et al., 2021 ).…”

“…In recent years, a great deal of diversity has been described among Paracoccidioides species, and there is an intense debate about how such diversity translates into taxonomic changes [ 1 , 2 ]. In 2009, the classic Paracoccidioides brasiliensis was split into the P. brasiliensis complex and P. lutzii [ 3 , 4 ].…”
