Biopolymer-based systems are extensively studied as green alternatives for traditional polymer coatings, e.g. in corrosion protection. Chitosan-epoxysilane hybrid films are presented in this work as a chitosan-based protective system, which could e.g. be applied in a pretreatment step. For the preparation of the chitosan-epoxysilane hybrid systems, a sol-gel procedure was applied. The function of the silane is to ensure adhesion to the substrate. On zinc substrates, homogeneous thin films with thickness of 50 − 70 nm were obtained after thermal curing. The hybrid-coated zinc substrates were characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, ellipsometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As model corrosion experiments, linear polarization resistance was measured, and cathodic delamination of the weak polymer coating poly(vinylbutyral) [PVB] was studied using scanning Kelvin probe. Overall, chitosanepoxysilane hybrid pretreated samples showed lower delamination rates than unmodified chitosan coatings and pure PVB. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirmed a reduced ion permeability and water uptake by chitosan-epoxysilane films compared to that of a non-modified chitosan coating. Even though the coatings are hydrophobic and contain water, they slow down cathodic delamination by limiting ion transport.

Cathodic delamination is measured on iron surfaces covered with different poly(n-alky methacrylates), where the alkyl is an n-C n H 2n + 1 (n = 1, 4, 18) group. The polymers are prepared by free radical polymerization in solution and spin coated individually on iron. The materials were characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and contact angle measurements. Barrier properties in potassium chloride were obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Artificial defects in the polymer model coatings were exposed to 1 M potassium chloride as corrosive medium, and cathodic delamination was measured by a scanning Kelvin probe. The surface wettability decreases as the size of the pending alkyl group in the backbone increases. The same chemical feature shows also an effect on the cathodic delamination and on the electrochemical impedance results. Delamination is roughly twice as fast when n = 1, compared to n = 4 and n = 18. Water in Rechargeable Multivalent‐Ion Batteries: An Electrochemical Pandora's Box

Multivalent‐ion batteries built on water‐based electrolytes represent energy storage at suitable price points, competitive performance, and enhanced safety. However, to comply with modern energy‐density requirements, the battery must be reversible within an operating voltage window greater than 1.23 V or the electrochemical stability limits of free water. Taking advantage of its powerful solvation and catalytic activities, adding water to electrolyte preparations can unlock a wider gamut of liquid mixtures compared with strictly nonaqueous systems. However, a point‐by‐point sweep of all potential formulations is arduous and ineffective without some form of systematic rationalization. The present Review consolidates recent progress, pitfalls, limits, and insights critical to expediting aqueous electrolyte designs to boost multivalent‐ion battery outputs.
