Fundamentals and recent progress relating to the fabrication, functionalization and characterization of mesostructured materials using diverse synthetic methodologies

Abstract: Since 1990 and the invention of the very first generation of ordered mesoporous silica materials, several innovative methodologies have been applied to synthesize, characterize, and modify silica/non-silica mesoporous materials.

“… 43 To this end, we will also study the further functionalization of these silica nanodiscs to equip them with additional properties. 44 Generating silica-stabilized membrane proteins or cell-based reactors has been attempted for several decades by coating cells with silica either by the direct addition of silica particles 45 or by employing charged polymers in combination with silicic acid. 46 Our approach, however, provides well-defined membrane discs, and their diameter can be adapted by using different MSP constructs as well as different lipid compositions.…”

“…Although the synthesis and grafting of mesostructured SiO2 materials is by far the best documented in literature 14,15 , non-siliceous mesoporous transition metal oxides (e.g. TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3, ZnO, ITO) are gaining interest as well as their use in a wide variety of solvents and pH ranges.…”

“…However, this technique is quite complicated and expensive to implement. Moreover, the obtained mesoporous materials, despite the unique characteristics, have some disadvantages such as insufficient thermal stability of the structure, powdered instead of granular state [19]. Post-synthetic modification of precipitated oxides, hydroxides and phosphates is a simpler, cheaper, however an effective method for regulating the parameters of their porous structure.…”
