Fundamental studies of water pretreatment of coal

Abstract: The construction of the nitrogen glove box system for the sample preparation was completed. This includes air locks for sample introduction and a thermoelectric heating/cooling system for preparing vacuum-dried samples. This glove box will allow us to study water pretreatment without the complicating effects of sample weathering. The reactor for doing the p.'eliquefactionexperiments in either water or steam was also completed during the past quarter. The water feed system and pressure control systems still nee… Show more

“…Results and Discussion -A summary of our data on water pretreatment of our coals is shown in Brandes,1987;Brandeset al, 1989;Khan et al, 1989). liquefactionare at a minimum where pyrolysistar yieldsare at maximum, which is contrary to previousstudies on Ilquefacatlon (Serio,et al, 1989(Serio,et al, , 1990 and expectations. The Pittsburgh coal is an exceptionhere, also.…”

“…The simulation of the standard FG-DVCmodel for maturation conditions is shown as a solid line. The simulation of a modified FG-DVCmodel f()r maturation in which CO and CO2are removed with a higher rate process Is shown as a dashed line, This work Is dlsaussed In more detail In Solomon et al (1990), The results for the gas yields and FT.IR analysis of the water pretreated residues Indicates that the prooess more closely follows the dashed line than the solid line, However, this will need to be oonflrmed by doing elemental analysis of the residues and additional FT-lR analyses.…”

“…For example, the rupture of weak covalent bonds, such as ether bonds, 143 the breaking of hydrogen bonds, 140 loosening of p-p interactions and breaking of hydrogen bonds, 142 the removal of minerals by sulfuric acids formed during the treatment with H 2 O 144 and the decrease in oxygen functional groups, 145 which are thought to be responsible for cross-linking reactions, have been proposed. The suppression of metal carboxylate-induced retrogressive reactions in liquefaction by the association of metal cations with water, 146,147 and the effect of dihydroxy aromatics formed by water treatment and their reactions with coal were also considered.…”

“…Analyses of gaseous hydrocarbons are very common, including flame ionization detector (FID) equipped on gas chromatography, MS [9] and FTIR [10], as well as combinations of these techniques. These analyses are usually operated batch-wise because a certain amount of time is required to separate the mixed hydrocarbons into individual components [11].…”
