Frothers are surfactants commonly used to reduce bubble size in mineral flotation. This paper describes a methodology to characterize frothers by relating impact on bubble size reduction represented by CCC (critical coalescence concentration) to frother structure represented by HLB (hydrophile-lipophile balance). Thirty-six surfactants were tested from three frother families: Aliphatic Alcohols, Polypropylene Glycol Alkyl Ethers and Polypropylene Glycols, covering a range in alkyl groups (represented by n, the number of carbon atoms) and number of Propylene Oxide groups (represented by m). The Sauter mean size (D 32 ) was derived from bubble size distribution measured in a 0.8 m 3 mechanical flotation cell. The D 32 vs. concentration data were fitted to a 3-parameter model to determine CCC95, the concentration giving 95% reduction in bubble size compared to water only. It was shown that each family exhibits a unique CCC95-HLB relationship dependent on n and m. Empirical models were developed to predict CCC95 either from HLB or directly from n and m. Commercial frothers of known family were shown to fit the relationships. Use of the model to predict D 32 is illustrated.

The rate of KCl recovery by froth flotation using low-grade carnallite is 70%-85%.Herein, a novel frother, dipropylene glycol butyl ether (DPNB), was prepared to increase the flotation efficiency of KCl recovery systems. DPNB could be applied at only half the dosage of the conventional frother methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) and achieve a KCl recovery rate of 94.8%-98.6% with a high KCl grade (63.2%-66.5%).To date, these results are the best reported for pneumatic flotation. DPNB had a 10% higher maximum dynamic stability factor compared with MIBC; moreover, the apparent entrainment velocity of DPNB was half that of MIBC. The molecular structure of DPNB had hydroxyl and ether groups, which promoted interactions with water, thereby contributing to its excellent froth stability. DPNB is environment friendly owing to its low volatility and, thus, a promising frother for the green and highly efficient flotation of KCl/NaCl.

Effect of Frothers on Bubble Size and Foam Stability in Potash Ore Flotation Systems

The objective of this project was to compare the effect of a selective flotation frother (MIBC) and powerful frothers (DEMPH and DF‐1012) on bubble size and foamability in water and in brine. In water, the bubble size is clearly reduced by flotation frothers which prevent bubbles from coalescing. The present study shows that the bubbles do not coalesce in brine and, therefore, frothers do not affect the size of bubbles in brine. The dynamic foamabality index measured in brine is much lower than that in water for weak frothers (e.g. MIBC); for both tested strong frothers the foamability measurements in brine reveal formation of meta‐stable foams.
