Fundamental and Advanced Therapies, Vaccine Development against SARS-CoV-2

Abstract: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has been affecting the world since the end of 2019. The severity of the disease can range from an asymptomatic or mild course to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with respiratory failure, which may lead to death. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, scientists around the world have been studying the genome and molecular mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 infection to develop effective therapies and prevention. In this review, we summarize the progres… Show more

“…Vaccination is a critical infection prevention tool and several vaccines have been proven to prevent serious infection with COVID‐19, including mRNA‐based and adenovirus‐vector vaccines. 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 For pediatric patients, aged 12–17, only the BNT162b2 mRNA (Pfizer‐BioNTech ) vaccine is currently approved by Health Canada and the American Federal Drug Administration under Emergency Use Authorization. 13 , 14…”

“…The vaccines have proven to be particularly effective in reducing the risk of severe and devastating forms of the disease caused by the original strain of the coronavirus. However, the emergence of new and more infectious variants of the coronavirus casts further doubts on our ability to completely eradicate the disease ( 1 ). Since the initial variant, known as Alpha (B.1.1.7), several other variants have been identified, including the Delta (B.1.617.2) and the Omicron (B.1.1.529) variants.…”
